Razors Edge, 1986

This was the band back in the day- Patrick Whatoule on drums, Earl the Pearl Shuster on bass, Jake the Snake Myer on keys (he had a very cool Roland Juno 80) and me playing the same old Ibanez GB10. Taken at the gazebo in Emancipation Park, St. Thomas.

OK, can’t resist. Here’s a clip from that era. This was Take Me to the Movies, written by Jake and Earl, featuring full on manic Bert guitar and Miles of the 70s trumpet lines by Calvin Dallas. Recorded at Barnacle Bills Limelight Monday sometime in 1986. We called ourselves Cinema that night. As host Morgan Whalen said, “kind of a fusion rock thing with a little Hughie Masakela thrown in.”

Eric Clapton

Is it just me? I think Clapton’s best work as a player was Bluesbreakers through Cream. At this point in his playing he seemed to be taking risks, really pushing the envelope. There was feel. From that point on, while he is no doubt a phenomenal technical player, I just don’t feel it. Even his forays back to the blues seem a bit too, well, perfect. As various old recordings come to light of the Bluesbreaker/Cream days, I am reminded of that energy, that being in the moment that seemed so visceral. I love Eric from those days.

Imaginary Journey

Was bored a couple of months ago and cranked out a few favorites with Band in a Box as my rhythm section. Also trying out Garage Band (kinda easy, but limited).

This is Imaginary Journey, a little piece I wrote back in 1982 (egads) after a mind-bending night in St. John with John Shaffer.
