Is it just me? I think Clapton’s best work as a player was Bluesbreakers through Cream. At this point in his playing he seemed to be taking risks, really pushing the envelope. There was feel. From that point on, while he is no doubt a phenomenal technical player, I just don’t feel it. Even his forays back to the blues seem a bit too, well, perfect. As various old recordings come to light of the Bluesbreaker/Cream days, I am reminded of that energy, that being in the moment that seemed so visceral. I love Eric from those days.
